CMDRR: Our Work



Phase 1 (2007-10)



Jana Unnayan Samiti Tripura (JUST), launched Community Based Disaster Preparedness (CBDP) project in 2007, among 10 identified villages of Teliamura R.D.Block and Nagar Panchayat. In 2009, the project title was renamed as Community and Family Disaster Preparedness (CFDP) extending another 5 more villages under Kalyanpur R.D.Block. CFDP Staffs facilitated community to analyze their situation (vulnerability, risk and capacity assessment) followed by preparation of need based Plan of Action on Disaster Management and submission of the same to GS Meeting. Linkage with line departments with special drive through deputation was one of the strategies.

Line departments and PRIs implemented several schemes to reduce river bank erosion and to reduce adverse impact of flood amounting nearly Rs 50 Lacks.

UST identified innovative ideas have been adopted in Teliamura Sub- Divisional Flood Management Plan (2010-2011) of the government. Traditional practice, Kamli lata plantation has been identified as one of the good practice to reduce river bank erosion. Sphere - India, New Delhi awarded JUST a citation for the said on 22/01/2010. Presently JUST is functioning as Nodal Agency, Disaster Management Section, Teliamura Sub Division, and West Tripura.


Present work:



Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) Project was launched in 15 nos flood and erosion prone villages under Kumarghat Block, North Tripura with the Goal to support strategies and complement existing strategies that enable local communities and institutions to better prepare for, mitigate and respond adequately to disasters by enhancing their capacities to cope and respond, thereby increasing resilience and reducing vulnerability.

To strengthen Disaster preparedness and response capacities of differently abled individual, vulnerable families, village communities, institutions and local authorities community and family level different strategies has been undertaken to create culture of preparedness among the families and the communities. The Project also aims to bring the following changes in the community for sustainability of the program : -

Relief to preparedness Dependency to self reliance Sufferers to stakeholder Inactive to active role player ( in case of preparedness to face disaster) Helpless to control over the event Mindset of getting relief to empower the community .
